Last weekend, we gathered under the soft glow of autumn light to explore the soul of Barolo—a wine steeped in history, layered in aroma, and rich in emotional resonance. From the first pour, it was clear: this wasn’t just a tasting, it was a conversation across generations, vineyards, and philosophies.

We began the evening with the 2020 Villa Pani Barolo DOCG, a contemporary-style Barolo that charmed with its vibrant fruit, soft tannins, and easy-drinking profile. Its friendly price and accessibility made it a welcoming introduction for many, especially those new to Nebbiolo’s expressive range.

Next came the 2019 Broccardo Barolo Ravera, offering a more modern interpretation—richer in texture, with notes of spice, black tea, and forest herbs. It sparked thoughtful conversation about stylistic evolution and the layered possibilities within Barolo’s terroir.

The third wine, 2019 Figli Luigi Oddero Barolo DOCG, brought us back to tradition. A blend from Serralunga, Castiglione, and La Morra, it impressed with its clarity, structure, and honest expression of place—proof that classic methods still speak with strength.

Then came the evening’s highlight: the 2013 Figli Luigi Oddero Barolo Vigna Rionda. Deep, mineral, and quietly powerful, it left a lasting impression. Aromas of dried rose, iron, and black cherry unfolded slowly, inviting reflection and reverence. This wine resonated most deeply with our guests, earning quiet nods and long silences.

One unexpected moment of curiosity came when guests began asking about Barolo’s color—its pale ruby hue, often mistaken for delicacy, belies the wine’s formidable tannins and aging power. It was a beautiful reminder that appearances in wine, as in life, can be wonderfully deceptive.

To round out the evening, we added a surprise fifth bottle: the 2021 Kirkland Signature Barolo DOCG from Costco. And to everyone’s delight, it held its own. Bright aromatics, balanced fruit, and remarkable value made it a crowd favorite and sparked lively conversation about accessibility and quality.

Barolo Night reminded us that great wine isn’t just about prestige—it’s about connection, curiosity, and the joy of discovering something together. Here’s to more nights like this, where every glass opens a door.
